Moving from the coast to the mountains- - and DIY home and gardens evolving

8/11/15----Today is Nelsons birthday so we are starting the day out by going to the Waffle House his favorite place to eat.  Don,t know just yet what all we will do before this day is over!

BIRDS, BUTTERFLIES AND  FLOWERS

HOME AND GARDEN

DIY  (me and grandson Nelson)

Year 2015

     In the month of July this is what I  watched just out my back door!

7/17/15  The weather is hot and dry, in fact this spring and summer has turned out to be a near drought season and we will be in a drought if the weather doesn't change very soon.
       Since moving here this has been the worst season for growing gardens ( vegetable or flower) I have seen.  I am finding it hard to keep my spirits up and to continue on with my plans for the year. The worst part of it all is the fact that weeds and grass doesn't seem to be bothered all that much.  It's so hot tho I tend to want to walk passed those annoying things! I have to see the glory in all of it- after all it's all about living in the nature of things.
SO !
To the thermostat and T. V. remote is where I am headed!
Wait! I need a tall glass of iced tea !

     What happened to this bird family in the middle of the night during a fierce storm?  I can only guess by the reactions of the parent birds.  In the early morning after the storm when I discovered the nest was empty I searched my garden areas thinking the baby birds must be close by, I searched to no avail . Several times during the days to come I continued to keep my eyes opened and to dodge those parent birds who some how thought I had something to do with their misery.  A couple of days later I spotted one of the parent birds with food in its bill so I decided to watch and I saw where it went and then flew quickly away.  I thought there must be at least one of the babies in that area so I work my way over to the spot under some hedges. Those parent birds were a great team, they were going to keep me far away from who ever they were feeding.
      I have decided I have no part in this stories ending, it's all up to nature.  Nature is where this short visit to my back deck came and nature will be where it ends.  I enjoyed the time I had to observe it.  Thank you Mother Nature, although I must add I wish it had ended differently.

THE END!

After a storm that came in the night ( 7/14/15 ).

The family continues to grow  ( 7/12/15 ).

This is Mom and Dad working together to feed and protect.

Several days later, growing wing feathers.

This is the four baby's she will protect and feed.

This is the Mocking Bird who built the nest and laid the eggs.

This is a Mocking bird nest in a fake tree on my back deck.

The Tale of A Mocking Bird Family

Most people would probably rather have blue birds or maybe any other bird on their deck but I didn't have to make the choice and I take whatever comes to visit me.  I would never deliberately destroy this chance to see nature up front and in full view of my camera.

=============================================================

I really like this -and it's just a start I have other ideas of improvements to this area. Starting photo several photos below.

6/30/15   Nelson and I started this project in early April this is how it looks now.
I must add this has been a very dry May and June!

This space is filling in it will look good next year.
5/21/15   There is much more work to be done here orange day lilies and purple cone flowers.

5/21/15     Can't wait to see the roses in bloom.

    5/21/15  This started out as a strawberry bed.  I had no luck so I changed my plan and now I am going to see what I can do with a small rose garden.  Wish me luck!

     4/29/15- This week I bought  a beautiful  floribunda Summer Romance rose bush and I hope to get it planted in my rose garden today. I have worked at the hi school for the last two days.  Scheduled to work again tomorrow so today has to count for home projects. I have to get my little peeps into their coop-there are some work to be done on that also today.

     4/21/15 -- I ordered another rose bush this morning,  Tess of  the d'urbervilles  (red).  Still haven't received my Pretty Jessica (pink), I hope they get here soon my rose garden is waiting. I'm afraid the Iceburg (white) isn't doing so well- I bought it on sale!  Most times that works out fine but maybe not this time.  The grandiflora Gold Metal (yellow) on sale is doing fine and it has buds ready to open.
     What a cool morning, down right chilly.  My little peep's will have to stay inside again today!!  Unless it warms up soon I'm thinking I will be inside also.  Subbing Wed. and Fri. this week.

Planted in the spring of 2013 -Viburnum-Chinese Snowball bush.

     4/16/15   It has been raining almost all week.  I worked Tues. On Wed.  I went to the dentist to have a crown replaced it fell off this past weekend.  Bad news it can't be fixed, I don't know what I am going to do just yet!

                   My little peeps are growing- they are getting wing and tail feathers!

April 10-2015-- Oh what a beautiful morning!

4/08/15    Here we go again!
These little peep's are so cute!

4/10/15  One afternoon's work, this is how my  Rose Garden is looking.
 In the center Gaura-around the edges  roses!

Remember? THIS WAS MY STRAWBERRY PATCH

     The stones aren't properly arranged yet, more thought is needed.  Top soil, amendments and mulch is needed.  Those in back are David Austin (Nameless), The 2 up front are Floribunda, left side Iceburg.  I have ordered a David Austin Pretty Jessica in memory of my sister we lost to breast cancer.  Of course the color is a brilliant Pink.  It is suppose to be here at the end of April. I purchased another rose bush today, a Grandiflora Rose-Gold Metal- a yellow rose.  Grandifloria's are a cross between a Tea rose and a Floribunda.

4/2/15 --"Another project!", says my grandson Nelson.
Now for a gate, paint and some climbing roses!  Maybe!

4/4/15    April is here and all my time has been invested in clean up.  Nothing anyone else notices but we do.  Nelson was such a help to me, he is growing up into a very nice individual.  This past week has been spring break.  Nelson went on a school trip to the Outer Banks for 4 days. He got back just in time to spend the rest of his break helping me.

3/28/15     I hope I don't loose any of my plants through this late season freeze tonight!  In the 20's .

3/25/15    I have been working hard on all my mature flower beds  removing any weeds that are popping up, trying to stay ahead of the weeds.  I have moved a few viburnum to the white flower garden. this garden is going  to be a challenge. March is closing fast.

3/17/15    This morning I had to go to court and prove I had my car inspected then off to Lowe's to get some white flowering plants-Candy Tuft and white Pansies. These are to go in my white flower garden the only new bed I plan to start this year. Remember I started the rose garden in the fall.

     Last night I finally decided what my  goal for the gardens are this spring. I will concentrate on beautification. Mainly mulching, cleaning out, separating clumps and moving them, which I have already started. Getting an overall look at the gardens as they grow this year.  Wish me luck!  I will still have a vegetable garden.

March 8th, 2015 and daylight savings time has started, I missed an hour of sleep.

March 5th and the wind is fierce! Another cold front moving in.

March 1st, 2015 it's a Dreary Sunday.

March is three days away.  Come on spring we are waiting.

A bird feeder we call-- THE BIRDS BIG BUFFET-- NOT THE BIG BIRDS BUFFET!!!
On a temporary  stand (we have plans for a much better look).

As you can see Henny Penny visits it.  She says," I have feathers too."

     I got this feeder from my son Rex.  We plan to make a support ( or lift) make from brick or blocks to set it on.  Meanwhile it sits on found things from around the property.

Could have never decorated this tree as lovely myself!

What's that in your hand? Just can't separate teens from their electronics.

waking up to this was exhilarating.

2/26/15  We finally got it, the wonderful winter wonderland everyone waits for, it was beautiful.

A new home for my knock-out-roses new home. Clean up will come! we're tired!
2/9/15- Finally we had a wonderful weekend. My grandson and I took advantage and moved my knock-out rose bushes to a new area in my backyard. This will give me the room I need for my future rose garden.

 My daughter-in-law gave me a gift of Amaryllis--I am really enjoying them in my inside flower garden this winter.

FEB. 5TH  Enjoying one of my Christmas gifts!

 1/29/2015- I have started substituting at the local public schools.  I really like doing it and I can use the extra money.  More money for my projects.  Who doesn't need more money?  No one I know!!
   1/22/15--  I am substitute teaching now, something I decided to do for a little extra time away from the homestead.  I haven't been to busy but it is enjoyable and gives me a little extra cash to spend. I have a half day this afternoon.

  1/15/2015--We are having lots of unsettled weather.  Not much going on right now.  I am trying to get my weight back in order. To much good food throughout the holidays.

MAY WE ALL BE BLESSED WITH GOOD HEALTH AND LOTS OF GOOD TIMES!!

From Fall  2009- 2015  and the rest of the story.

===========================================================

===========================================================

While I was visiting with my daughter we were invited to a New Years eve celebration.  Plenty  good food and beautiful fire works!  What a wonderful closure to a very good year.

Dressed up for Christmas 2014

What a great Christmas season this has been.  Celebrating with family and friends has been such a pleasure.  We were not home all this time, we spent some of Christmas with my second daughter and her daughter (one of my five lovely granddaughters).

THANKSGIVING  2014

It's Thanksgiving and my oldest grandson's birthday-- we will celebrate both at the same time.  His favorite is Strawberry.
Time to celebrate with family.  I prepared a turkey dinner for my daughter and her family, also for my oldest grandson and his girlfriend. Everyone enjoyed the dinner and fellowship with everyone who was able to come.  Not all my family could be here this year, busy lives!. Maybe next year more family members will be here, that would be wonderful. The plants in the background are there to survive the cold winter weather.  This is an east facing window and it has worked out well for the plants.  I am thinking about glass shelves for these windows.

We live in a cove and don't get snow every time snow falls here, sometimes if we want to experience it we have to make a quick trip up the mountain on the Park Way.

Nov. 2014--It's to cold for outside projects.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Oct. 2014 -  For my garden, a bug path-  I am not going to finish this path until warmer weather- only a few stones finished.  Something to look forward to come spring.
Oct. 2014 -- I am really enjoying this cute little project.

From frogs to bugs!

My helper coming home from school.  2014- a bag of mulch waiting for him, I think he saw it!
So glad I can count on my grandsons help.  Somethings he does for me I  couldn't do all alone.  Like lifting  80 lbs. bags of cement and using the post hole digger. He is such a good  helper.

*********************************************************************
A very pretty new breed, a mixture from South America and North America.

My sister Donna gave me this chicken.  She is doing fine and laying blue eggs.  No dyeing these for an Easter Egg hunt.  Spring 2014.

My grandson and I put up the fences and birdhouses in the background

MORE IMPROVEMENTS THIS SURELY BEATS THAT METAL FENCE.

Another upgrade for our back yard gardening.  I really like this one.  Early fall 2014.

=============================================================

Fall 2014 is here and the squash and tomatoes are through -Volunteer Morning Glories beautify the garden space.

The end to this growing season is approaching soon it will be to cold for outside work.

Another feature-a place to store my plants donated to me by my son-in-law- what color to paint it?
Where to put all these potted plants so they will be close at hand, watering them daily becomes a chore.  Just what I need, somewhere to house them, a gift from my son-in-law.

=============================================================

=============================================================

    English roses David Austin, Grandiflora and Floribunda roses are the type I am interested in buying for my rose garden.  This is not the first time I have tried having a rose garden. Quite a few years ago I told my four children what I was planning and that for mothers day all I wanted was a rose bush from each one of them.  They came through with several and I ended up with a nice garden.  At least with the abundance of plants.  What I was lacking was the knowledge to keep them growing nicely. The first year they were beautiful.  Mr. Lincoln-Queen Elizabeth-Sexy Rexy-a beautiful white one President Kennedy I think and a coral colored one-there were several I no longer remember.  Needless to say my choice for the garden location was wrong.  Not enough sun!! If that's not bad enough, I had no idea how hungry and thirsty they get and they don't want the water on their leaves, oh no!! I really hope I have learned from that garden failure.  I am learning more from books and the internet.  Wish me luck!

My sweet children would you help me do this one more time.

This is the result-  I am excited!  I have only four rose bushes now and so busy this season I have no more photo's.  So elegant!

Although I only have four rose bushes now, this will change come 2015.  I have been working to improve the soil, roses are hearty feeders.  I think I am learning, this David Austin (pink) is just beautiful this is the first year in this garden spot. I have been looking on the internet for the name of this bush.  I misplaced the papers that came with it and  now I can't find them.

A yellow knock-out-rose will find a new home-check out that stepping stone in the upper right. Yes! I make that!
I will have to move this knock-out--rose and put it in another part of my flower beds.  I  planted it here after I decided to do away with my strawberry garden, but before I make plans for a rose garden.

????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

BLACK SPOTS ON LEAVES ( I might need this)!

 1 gallon water
1 1/2 Tbs baking soda
4  Tbs. horticultural soap mix
2 Tbs.vegetable oil ( to make the mix stick)

????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

 A ROSE GARDEN IS BORN!

TO WORK ON A NEW PLAN

And that is how it happened

?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Maybe with a different plan I can still have strawberries.  I have read that the plants can be placed among the flowers--a plant here and there-  I might try that -- sounds simple!

As you can see - Not good!

I have decided this strawberry garden will have to go, much to much work and not enough rewards.

     A photo of the strawberry garden in the spring, 2013    I am new at growing strawberries and I didn't know how much work would be involved.  So my goal this season (2014) is to learn and experience first hand what it take to grow great tasting berries.

eight strawberry plants to start --in 2012

I started this strawberry garden with high hopes.  I love strawberries and thought that if I had them in my gardens it would be so nice to just go outside and pick berries anytime they were in season.  Well, that would be nice!

A LITTLE HISTORY

A STRAWBERRY GARDEN turns into a ROSE GARDEN

started early in the year of 2012 with
Only eight plant
I am finding out how much hard work is involved in having a strawberry patch

LET'S CHANGE SOME THINGS!

======================================================

=======================================================
M y frog garden- each stepping stone is different  -Day Lilies and purple cone flowers.

It has been a busy summer and fall is shutting down the gardens.

This is a close up of a stone  I made for another path- my frog garden.  Love it!
I'm getting good at this and enjoying it too!   Creativity exploding!!

I need a mold  for this project--Oh! here is the bottom of a flower pot, just the right size!!

This project was finished in Oct. 2014. On a very hot day! Clean up, then take a photo.

FROM MY DECK  TO THE GARDENS

Next!!

With this success  I decided it was time to expand - I get carried away sometimes!

   l needed a mold in the shape I wanted, instead of purchasing one I used the bottom of a rectangular bird cage,  It worked fine!  The result is in the photo above.  It didn't happen over night tho, it took about a month to mold and dry all 17 stones.  Remember I had only one mold but plenty of time on my hands.

Late summer Iris's blooming (a gift from my daughter Terri)  and Zinnia's coming up(from seed pack) .

First Stepping stone project for my garden paths.

     This project was found on Pinterest and the leaves I used was found on a walk to the river behind my home.  Plant type unknown.

 This project started all of a sudden, when I wanted to do something different. I need some stepping stones for the pathways.  To the internet again- after watching several how to video's I thought ,"I can do that", and off to the store I go.  Cement is cheap and that was all I needed, I have the water. What I didn't have was the experience-hands on and -practice makes perfect- right?  The first ones I made were not very smooth and seemed to crack much to easily.  After making a few phone calls to friends and family who I know had worked with cement I learned there were several kinds of cement, so back to the supply store. Things  improved after that.

A NEW PROJECT ON THE HORIZON.

I need stepping stones, don't you think?

Peeping through

Wisteria-a vine for my fence!

An overview of my front lawn and gardens - Bandit resting in the shade -chicken in the Liriopi scratching for bugs! He is such a good dog-We taught him to leave the chickens alone as you can see his back is turned to her. Foreground Delphinium, I save seeds from these plants.

Not much time for this area lately-  I forgot how often chickens poop, the fence is a quick fix to keep them off my porch when I let them free range for insects.

What a beautiful sight-I took this from my back deck.
Such a wonderful surprise- to be working in the gardens -looking up to see this beautiful rainbow!  what if I had been inside looking at t. v., I do that a lot in the winter months.

And another

Another view just down the line

My daughter gave me this Mimosa tree- I planted it in my main flower bed-eventually this area will evolve into a  privacy  screen from the nursery fields.  I have planted several tall shrubs and trees here.  All the flowers will be given homes in my flower beds in back.  The winter was harsh and I will have to trim out some dead branches.

I have three blue berry bushes- blueberry pie anyone?

I cleaned out another area for this squash and tomato garden.  Last year I used this space for a burn pile.
This small garden gave an abundance of enjoyment.  We ate all we wanted, some went in the freezer, and plenty to share with my family!!

Swallowtail butterflies and Double Tiger Lilies

My granddaughters and friends gave me money for my birthday I bought mulch- I love it.  thank you!
This garden will evolve as time goes by.  You will see!

Pink flamingo chair-because my sister Mary didn't want me to put a pink flamingo here!
While at the beach this summer with my sisters, we visited a few gift shops and I wanted to buy a flamingo sculpture for my tropical garden. My sister advised me not to go there!  I took her advice but my decision weighed heavy on me, so I decided to compromise.

An over view of one area -a tropical garden- at least that's the plan.

While I worked on special projects I still kept my vegetable and flower gardens going.

My camera is a small digital --I aim and click that's easy to see.

Now that I have done all this work I can see why I need a much better camera.  My blog is to leave a record for my family and friends . They need to be able to view it at  it's best.

Surly you approve! My back yard gardens are taking shape.  I have moved several plants from their original spot to their new location.  Knowing me they just might be moved again, as things evolve.

Paint makes it what it aint
A face lift for the little chicken coop.
================================================================

================================================================

This little shop is so nice, I can listen to the radio while I work outside, lights too. With  a tiller by daughter loans me from time to time makes easy work for clearing new ground.

Lights and music

How many people have Christmas light that only 1/2 of the set works.  I had lots of those and don't know why I held on to them but I found a place I could use them.

Lots of stuff

The chickens have their own house now so I cleaned the little building they were using and make it my workshop.  It didn't get to messy because I put their little coop inside it and covered the space under it with a thick layer of straw.

     Before I had a chicken coop I had chickens. After they outgrew the small coop they lived in a room added to the back of my car port and because it's all separate from my house I didn't mind.  Things change, its time to clean out the room and put the chicks in their new home. Now I have a larger place to keep all my gardening supplies. I have lots of plans to make this work shop better.

  A WORKSHOP

Waking up!  Far left  a new River Birch

I will be concentrating on where to plant some trees.
WE NEED SOME TREES BACK HERE!!

Time to wake up it's spring again!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------__________________________________________________________
This has been an extremely cold winter and with a few snow storms, but it was not as wet as our 2013 winter season and we are so ready for a warm up.  I can't wait to get busy outside.  Cabin fever you will be a memory!

Straw hat???  The sun was shining!!

Bandit was there to observe, his approval?  Check the yellow spot on the bottom of the snowman-( Lady that is)- shame, shame Bandit!  The only snowman for this winter season.

A boy and his dog

Chocolate pie in case the electricity goes out! It didn't- we ate it for breakfast anyway!

Lots of cold weather, some snow, no ice though which was a very good thing.

In his winter coat Bandit is enjoying  the snow.

We had a few snow days.  Most cases it was nice. We make snow cream just one time.

Coming back from town this little cutie was standing in the middle of the road
we picked it up-took a picture placed it on f/b in -no time it was back home.

Before we went to f/b face book we searched the neighborhood, we were sure he belonged to someone close.  We were right, the parents of one of my grandsons friends had just purchased him weeks before. We were so glad he didn't get hit by a vehicle speeding on this busy highway!

More time to practice his Sax

He is getting good at it!! Practice, practice,  is all I have to say about that!

And the gardens are sleeping.

Filling the bird feeders in the snow!
INTO ANOTHER YEAR

GOOD BY TO 2013

It' s Christmas!
Where did the time go??

Dirty Santa--All that's left is wrapping paper and empty boxes

Just can't leave those electronics alone.

Two weeks before Christmas is when our family gather to celebrate the holidays. We meet at my son Rex and Stephanies home.  We play games exchange gifts and eat.  A fun family time.

Where did the time go??

A fall view of my surroundings
This was not a good year for leaf watching.

My Chinese  dogwood planted in--  2012.  Now fall 2013.

Mustard greens for fall harvest
It does look like I would pick up my tools before taking a photo.  I will try to remember!!

2013--This if a photo of the Desert Garden ( in a much to wet part of my gardens)  another winter like this past one and I might loose this bed.---What to do and where can I place it?

A River Birch in the center is one of several tree's I have planted in different parts of the yard.

The reason for some of these photo's are so that I can go back and see the changes as they happen.  I planted that River Birch in the center of this photo last year. It is really growing  I really need some trees back here.

****************************************************************

     Some time after this photo was taken early in the morning someones dog got away and visited my yard. Ducky Lucky sleeps in the hedges next to the house. He had no defense against the intruder.

A SAD DAY FOR US.

  REST IN PEACE---YOU WERE A WONDERFUL DUCK

Fall --The duck and chickens are busy, busy, busy.

What a difference

Penstemon

Swallow tail butterfly

We did have a few sunny days. Butterfly Bush- Swallowtail butterflies love them.

Purple Butterfly Bush

CACTUS(from a neighbor)--RED HOT POKERS (from my sister Donna)-YUCCA( from a ditch bank.)

LOOK!  ONLY ONE YEAR LATER!   MY RIVER BIRCH IS DOING VERY WELL TOO ( CENTER)!

The job now will be to label the color and heights of each cluster and move them once I know where they will look best.  There are several different heights and colors. Not knowing this at first had meant that I have short ones in the back and tall in front, colors that would look better if grouped with some other color.  Labeling and measuring each group when they are in full bloom will give me a plan I can work with.

It's time to label these beauties and get them in their proper setting.

FINALLY A BREAK IN THE WEATHER--SUNNY DAYS!!

My main flower bed growing by leaps and bounds!

MEXICAN MORNING (EVENING )PRIMROSE

The new Iris garden

I am learning this area is probably to wet for an Iris bed.  These are things we learn with
 experience.   A new location will have to be found.  I hope I don't loose to many from rot.

And the lessons we learn!
===================================================================
===================================================================

A stroll through my gardens, the pleasure we feel when we see our accomplishments.  How much everything has grown in such a short time. The day lilies and all the rest of the gardens are doing great.

Lets take a stroll in the gardens today!
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

 While we were on vacation our chickens managed to escape their refuge and a bad thing happened. Dog's  visited my yard.   I lost three of my chickens that day.

ANOTHER SAD DAY!
Fenced in for protection!

      The nursery owners renting the surrounding properties are using chemicals and it's time to protect my Henny Penny's and Ducky Lucky from  these poisons.

SO!

  I decided to clip their wings after putting them inside a fence and watching them fly over with no problem.  I watched a video on the internet on how to clip their wings safely. My grandson and one of his friends caught them and help hold them for me. The boys were so concerned, " is this going to hurt." After the first one was clipped and safely in the pen they were convinced I knew what I was doing. The hens were very confused for several days, walked the fence line all day hoping to find a way out.  They seem to be adapting to their fate, at least I hope so.

Come to us Henny Penny  1-2  and 3.

We have a home for our chickens  another fix- me-up.

    While working on this chicken coop I  found lot of large nails, this is a very old coop and the strong nails are making the remodeling very difficult for me, I don't have the tools I need. I also went to the supply store and saw the cutest little chicks, I might get one or two more. I have decided on creamy yellow with a soft lavender for the trim. Make it look like a real hen house! The chicks are growing fast I need to get busy.

This is a very old chicken coop, it was cheap and I intend to give it an upgrade.

A very nice gentleman found this, delivered and set it up for me.

SOMETHING  ELSE TO WORK ON !

I am one curious drake, so don't expect me to drop any eggs!!
So entertaining!!

A confused broody hen--  Please don't take my eggs again,  I want a family!!

Funny things are always happening around here, take the time our chicken went broody.  She decided to hide her eggs from us but we found them in the bush in our neighbors yard. We removed them, there were about a dozen, that didn't stop her, she started another stash. We thought if we put something big in her nest she would stop. The next day my grandson decided to check and see if she returned to the spot.  What he found was hilarious, He told me to grab my camera- this is what we found. Silly, silly girl!!  No rooster in the hen house, you are wasting your time and my eggs!

A nest of eggs from my chickens!!  It has begun,  fresh eggs !

Listen to me Chicks!!  We have egg boxes for your comfort!!

Finally-fun time!!  I'm one proud and handsome duck!

What's wrong with this picture?

Any questions to  my DNA?

Meanwhile we are grown up -looking for insects

You call this a pool?

Ducky Lucky
A NEW MEMBER TO THE FLOCK

Now to check out the pets we have !

      We have a new member to our pet family, a little duck, we are confused about its DNA tho
the person who gave it to us said it was a runner duck.  In time we learned it was just a duck.  Which was absolutely fine with us.  Some time later we were told it was a male.  It seems the curly feathers on his back near his tail feathers was the answer to that question.

LOOK! A FRIEND GAVE US A BABY DUCK!

1- CREPE MYRTLE
2 -HAWTHORNS
1- FLOWERING PLUM ( I AM GUESSING ABOUT THIS-PURPLE FOELEGE )

THESE TREES ARE STILL VERY SMALL BUT DOING WELL.

Two  (Kwanzan Flowering Cherry) trees planted before the picked fence was installed.

Same Cedar tree--summer-- 2014

I planted several trees next to the fence, this plan is to block the view of traffic on the busy hi-way! The fence and new trees are doing the job.

Cedar tree planted out front--   2011

the same mimosa in the summer of 2013

This Mimosa is in my main flower bed and I have several other trees started there, along with some low bushes.  My goal hear is to have a screen to hide the nursery fields next to me.  The flowers will be moved as the trees grow.

MIMOSA tree from Terri - 2010 --Gas plant behind.

Same Redbud--April 10/2015

I planted it near my kitchen window.  My bird feeders are there also.
Red Bud tree   2010

My sister Mary dug up this Red Bud for me.  It was just a little one foot sprout in a nursery pot.  I think it likes it here!

TREES

 Trees are all around me because the land is leased to a nursery business, that doesn't mean I have trees in my yard.  To the contrary I have very few trees and the one's I have are old  and don't provide me with shade or beauty so one of the first things I  had to do was to remove several  that were very old and sightly.  I then started planting trees around my property.  I haven't been very picky about  these trees , I'm glad to get about any kind.

IF YOU PLANT IT,  IT WILL GROW!!

This looks great -Summer 2013

     After the completion I got busy doing my thing.  Planting flowers and greenery. Some came from a project my son-in-law was doing to his family home, others I purchased.  I wanted the deck post left tall so I could add bird feeders to the tops.  This might not work!

After a long winter inside bandit really enjoys this outing!

Early spring always finds us on a walk to the river behind our home. March 2013

With the home improvements still going on we haven't packed away Christmas yet!!   -Myrtle the Turtle is among them!!

Myrtle the Turtle was a large part of our Christmas Celebration for quite a while at our family Dirty Santa game.

 Early Feb. 2013  It's cold outside!!  Bandit's favorite place to cozy up!!

Feb. 2012 ,We voted today- well my Grandma did- she took me with her- to see how it's done!!

Is it worth the effort? When there are so many other flowers just as pretty and not so needy.

Volunteer- Hollyhocks- and the battle to save them from rust!

Double white Hollyhocks-- Purchased

Mixed- all volunteers from a previous owner of this house.

   2012    As I find the hollyhocks  popping up all around my yard  I am transplanting them in a separate garden.  I can already see signs of rust so I must put up a good fight.  I am to remove all leaves that show signs of rust and discard (never in the compost pile)  or burn them as the spores are easily spread from plant to plant.

A battle against rust!

Vegetables are worth the effort.  I haven't had such good tasting food in such a long time. Pick them and cook them the same day. Full of flavor !

this is a sample of my spring bounty- I need a better camera or Renee!   Someday!

EACH DAY THE GARDENS  GROW- VEGETABLES AND FLOWERS

 As you can see my first gardens in many years are looking good,  I am very proud of my accomplishments. I might not take any pictures in July and August tho, you know, hot weather and how the weeds grow.  I have been very busy and all of it was doing things in these gardens I chopped  weeds and improved the walkways.  I plan on taking more pictures when the veggies and flowers have grown some.

squash and snap bush beans-what a treat!

The cactus plants are a gift from my neighbor-I have good neighbors!

With all that work going on inside I get things going outside.

a wheel barrow full of iris's, from a good neighbor for an Iris garden.

ANOTHER GIFT --TO GET THINGS STARTED!

I managed to get all those day lilies planted

  My daughter Rene came to see me today and she had several bags of  Day Lilies for my gardens.    She has a friend who has a mother that grew and sold day lilies.  The mother retired and now I have about 50 Day lily clumps. I have planted them in my day lily garden I can't wait to see them in bloom.  They were not labeled when they were removed from her garden so it will be a surprise and joy to see them in bloom for the first time. When my gardens are larger and better groomed -I will get Renee to come with her camera she is an expert.

DAY LILIES

IN MY BACK YARD GARDENS

 my garden's-my digital camera-I am the photographer
(I aim and click)

    My love for lilies is why I started my gardens.  I have been busy since I retired trying to accomplish in my remaining years what I have wanted to do as long as I can remember.  I didn't seem to  have the time while working.  I am the mother of four children and a single mother before they were all grown.  I have been the major support of two of my grandchildren.  Although I am retired I still have the two boys of my youngest daughter.
   I mention this in case you are wondering why I haven't done more since my retirement, without further ado about what life might hand us,  here are pictures of some of the Day Lilies I have now.  June 2012.

SO IT BEGINS
THEN IT HAPPENED

     As all the changes were happening inside they  finally moved those box woods.

While waiting for this to happen I bought a small chicken coop and six little chicks.

HOW ABOUT A KITCHEN MAKEOVER WHILE I HAVE THE CARPENTERS HERE

============================================================

============================================================

I will use this as a mudroom during my days outside.  What a pleasure. Yes it cost --I had to make some tough decisions for this to happen.  Glad I did it!

Quick and easy clean-up I am calling it a mudroom.

From a one bathroom house to a two bathroom home.
COMPLETED

 This is the area for the bathroom --the other end of the room  Support beams had to be added! The opening to the kitchen had to be moved.

NOW TO THE OTHER SIDE

CAN'T  BELIEVE THIS CHANGE

 Happy days are here.  Sweep the floor!

This area will be a bathroom and a utility!

Many surprises found here -the best one was the ceiling (check it out).

     We never know what we will find when  we start a make over.  The first thing that  had to be done in this area was to level the slanted floor, major?  yes, but they did it. Everything going smoothly and what a difference.

Door to the Outside deck

     This is the exit door to the new back deck.  This area is a porch that was enclosed, it still has the slanted floor and I really didn't know how I was going to live with this area.  It was the laundry/ storage room so I tried not to think about it.  When the deck was being built I started asking questions on how this could be improved.  To my delight this area will change.

Work will continue for the next several months!

=============================================================

INTO THE BACK DOOR- CHANGES FOR THE INSIDE - COME ON IN!

==============================================================

Around October--2012--Finished except for the clean up.

Colton gave Nelson his coat and he is still about to freeze. Please don't leave the house without proper clothes for the journey!

The little brother had to go with the big boys!  He was so cold he didn't think he was going to make it back home.  Next time check with grandma first, she will make sure you will stay warm.

The first two winters we were here it snowed a lot!

=================================================================================

Like so many things, there's a story behind this Christmas present.  Learning how to shoot it was the first of many things, night light fixture out!-oops (but grandma there was a bird sitting on top). Then the truth showed itself- pesky swallows- please shoot those swallows they are not native birds so it's o k.  He aims - he shoots- the feather's fly.  Down on the ground the gun goes--Oh no!  I hope I didn't kill it. The bird flies away.  Relief shows all over him, he doesn't have the heart to be a hunter, which is fine with me.  I'm the only one shooting this rifle to rid the yard of pesks !

A light bulb removed by the light company, "You have any young boys living here?"they asked!

Almost a bulls eye!!

You'll shoot your eye out!

Sorry to say with so much going on in the house we didn't remember to take many pictures !!

Sping 2012--Finally a white picket fence--Colton and I painted it!

 This  fence project has been the most rewarding project I have done so far.  Every time I go out my front door to take a look I can't describe the pleasure.  I  love the view  of  my yard and the traffic on the highway disappears, it's there, but it isn't in my space.  I don't plan to do much more to this are in the near future.  YES!!  HAPPY IS THE WORD!

 MY PLANS IN ACTION!!

NOW TO THE GARDEN'S I GO!

SPRING AND SUMMER 2012

THE YEAR OF MANY CHANGES FOR OUR LITTLE 3/4 ACRE .

March 2012  they are gone and my-son-in-law Greg plowed the area so the work out here can  begin.  I see the need for another fence.  My property line stops where the plowed field meets the box woods.  ( Another project in the future). Will the changes never end?

SO IT BEGINS

THEN IT HAPPENED

Growing and stretching

                  My grandson named them Henny Penny 1-2-3-4-5-and 6!  Easy to remember.

      This is my chicken coup and the present home for my little peeps 3 red and 3 white.  They will not be able to live here for long, so I am making plans for the next phase.  I had forgotten about all that poop they create, I must remember it is fertilizer for my garden. This coupe is nice because it is for little chicks and is also a rabbit pen. It folds up for easy storage when not in use and I am thinking it is about time to fold up this little home for a larger one, these little chicks are growing fast.

   Finally things are happening around here, I am now the proud owner of a flock of chickens.  My grandson has already given them names and he helps take care of them.   I bought a small chicken coop they are outgrowing it they will go into a building connected to my garage.  Bandit is very interested in these little creatures and we will have to watch him closely until we know we can trust him.

While waiting for this to happen I bought a small chicken coop and six little chicks.

Safe inside

   I am still waiting for the nursery to remove these box woods from the site that is included in my property line. They were given one year to do so, it has been much longer.  Two years and some.
  The photo below was taken in the spring of 2010 and it is the future sight of my flower/vegetable garden..these box woods belong to someone who is to move them, hopefully soon. There is about 1/4 acre which is plenty for me and my two grandsons. I have always wanted my own little plot to play in..some chickens too. I hope to get a few runner ducks.   I must add it is almost May and my backyard looks much like this picture still..with the addition of weeds and grass growing among the box woods.  The weather has been wet lately and I can't be to upset about this because if they were to remove them now it might  be a total slimy sticky mess.
      The box woods have finally been removed and the serious work begins. I have already spent some time setting up walk ways to the different beds some flower beds and some veggie beds.  I hope I will like what I am setting up and hope it isn't to much work for me.  Now I have one more problem, my camera that I use to take updated pictures is broken.  I bought a new one and guess what, I have misplaced the battery charger and I can't take any pictures of the work I have done since Greg tilled up the garden space.

 2010-12. A view of my future gardens- box woods waiting to be moved

A photo to remember how this garden space started.

*************************************************************

We have blue birds
The blue birds love this little house. I hope when I move it they will still come.

Just like that it's spring again.

Is here before we know it!

2011--Christmas at my daughter Terri's home!

The trees were added this past spring before the thought of a fence. Notice the untidy box woods are gone. Paint will come later.

Fall of 2011 After the fence--Good fences make good neighbors!

2011 just before the fence--way to close and  open  to the hi-way!

A 2009 view from the porch--for sale sign in the yard-- hi-way just beyond the box woods?
THIS PROJECT STARTED IN THE FALL OF 2011

     I have shown you in pictures just how dramatic a change can be, this area along a busy highway was more than I could stand.  I love this area of North Cove and as you can see on other pages just how wonderful my view is but working in my front yard was no pleasure as there was no separation from the highway and my yard.  One day sitting on my porch dreaming of my next project a light came on, out of nowhere ( I call this my God speaking to me) now as for you this might not be how you acknowledge your thought process and that's o.k. with me.  You have to understand before that moment this fence had never crossed my mind.

     A photo of the front lawn from the porch the hi-way runs by my house, it's a busy one in the summer and fall. I don't feel safe with all this open space. What I need is a white picker fence!  Another thing I have always dreamed of, will I get it?    I THINK SO!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A WHITE PICKET FENCE is beginning to emerge!

NOW COMES A BIG ONE --IT COST MONEY BUT WAS  WELL WORTH IT

=======================================================================

  A makeover for the bird bath

After cleaning out the weeds I found  lot's of herbs
so all I had to do was add a few more plants and some old items I brought with me.

the way it was the day we moved here.
     This area was make by the original owner of the home.  He built several cement in ground containers for his herb garden and he made a birdbath next to it. Instead of removing them I decided to clean out all the weeds and see what I could do to update. To my surprise there were several herbs there, all I had to do was buy a few more and get an ornament for the birdbath.  This is what is seen through the window setting at my dining room table.

WHAT COULD IT HOLD?

How about that awful patch of weeds under the dining room window

THEN BACK HOME AGAIN

Spring,  2011

After several hours of work and a few trips to the nursery for plants and bulbs you can see how it has changed the look of the entrance.

With those large box woods gone --giving this space a face lift
Now what to plant!

     We had to remove five box woods that were much to large.  Two at the beginning of the walk a very large one under the Japanese Magnolia and two more near the porch steps. After removing them it opened up the area for another flower bed.

My grandson and son -in law- checking things out standing on the walkway
This snapshot is to remember all those box woods !

 NOW FOR SOME IMPROVEMENTS ON THE WALKWAY
==============================================================
==============================================================
LATE SUMMER CALADIUMS -- bulbs ADDED are now up!
Summer

  WITH THAT DONE BACK TO THE GARDENS

The wicker chairs were white. I really liked this area rug!
I really enjoy this place.  Cool mornings in the sun with a cup of coffee.  In the shade on hot days with a glass of iced tea.  I really liked the area rug but the next winter on a very windy night it took a magic carpet ride, never to be seen again.  I have no idea what happened to it, there were strong  winds howling  in the night. I haven't found one I like since.!

With my old lawn furniture and a few plants  its nice!

     With all this yard work we need a place to take breaks, I have had all this furniture for many years, now to give the front porch a face lift with paint and a new area rug.

Nelson working on a birdhouse project. Nothing to smile about!

My  grandson Nelson--thinking things over!  Missing his mom and a little homesick!

My oldest grandson Colton- resting after digging up  the space for this new flower bed..

Not many pictures of Colton--for some unknown reason he is camera shy. My reflection in the window aiming  my camera for this rare photo.  He didn't have time to get up and run.

Now to watch  the Liriope grow!
     A few hours later and we were finished.

My grandsons  helping with this project.
With help from my grandsons, Colton and Nelson!

     After having several old trees removed from the front lawn we decided to start working this  area is early spring.  The weather is nice and we have been inside lots because of several snow storms. This tree needs a garden makeover how about some Liriope around it.

beginning of this main flower bed was started our first spring here!

This bed is on my side yarn, the trees in the back ground are owned by a nursery company.
This is the way it looked after removing all the grass

    Once spring came I was ready to venture outside  No one had lived in this house for several years and with my first serious inspection I soon was aware of  years of  neglect.

Early spring - 2010 Japanese Magnolia in bloom
 I will start working on this area soon.  I have already removed several box woods that are much to large for this area.

The first question was what to do first!!

AN EYE OPENING INSPECTION

Its' getting very cozy in here.

I painted the dining room and I'm not convinced I like!  All dressed up.

Painted
We moved in- then started the improvements.

My daughter Renee and granddaughter Emily helped me paint the living room.

An intense game on his wii

Moving in- Many things to do.
see that monitor heater!
MY FIRST MAJOR CONCERN

A BETTER HEATING SYSTEM

     This monitor heater kept us warm our first harsh winter here, the house was cold.  There was an- in the floor oil heating system with problems, I knew this because there was a strong oily smell when it was running so we mostly depended on the monitor heater.  I don't know much about these heaters so I asked the owner about the fireplace, he assured me it was safe to use.  I have always wanted a wood burning fireplace, here is my chance.

Moved in Jan. 1st 2010

IT'S SOLD!

     We were able to move in on Jan.1 2010.  After we moved in there were many changes to overcome, the changes were greater than what we thought, we were living in a small town anything we wanted was down the street.  The boys had friends on our block or just across town. Here we were twenty minutes from the closest town and the neighbors are mostly retiree's which is o.k. for me but the boys have to find new friends and not many close by. They walked to school before we moved now its ride a bus.  And of course new schools, new teachers and all the students strangers and it's the middle of the school year! It took awhile before I started questioning my motives but they came.  I still can't see the decision I made clearly, I can't believe it was a mistake.  We have many opportunities here.  It's up to us to make it work and be happy!  Mostly we needed a place to overcome!

WE LIKED WHAT WE SAW----(A FIXER UPPER).

FALL 2009

My oldest grandson Colton -he likes it!
THAT'S HOW IT ALL BEGAN
WE CAME HERE JUST TO SEE

      A phone call from my daughter Renee, who has lives here in the mountains for more than twenty year told me there was a house for sale just up the road from her, actually only one mile. Come and check it out was her suggestion, we did and everything else is history.
